Postmortem

Wow, has it really been a year already? Time sure flies. Feels like it was almost yesterday.

That was pretty cliche... anyway! It's been about a year (plus one month) since I've released this game. Unfortunately this isn't a new update post or anything of that sort, it's just going to be me rambling about the project as a whole. Scarecrow CO-OP 2 somehow managed to turn into a tiny smash hit of mine. Even though it's nowhere near being a masterpiece, it managed to garner quite a few downloads both on this here platform and gamejolt. A lot of it had to do with TikTok thanks to imblackjohn. I never ever expected this game to get so popular in such a short notice. It felt out of this world. It also meant that a lot of people were trying to play the game, when the servers couldn't even handle it.

It was a bit stressful and awkward having to tell people that they just couldn't play the game thanks to a server limit. Such is the price you must pay for an easier multiplayer solution. Thankfully, a very generous person DiddlyDoo donated a 100$ so people could play. And there were the servers - all funded and allowed 100 players to play concurrently. The numbers rose and spiked at about 70 players playing at the same time with one another. It felt so strange seeing so many people play a game that I've made.

If I recall correctly, the game wasn't even done yet. It was still in early access. Slowly but surely I updated the game until release, with a couple updates afterwards. It felt pretty nice to "assemble" the game together into what it is right now. Afterwards, it all sort of stopped. I felt like I had done everything I had planned and moved on to the next project.

To this day and to my surprise, people still play this thing. It's certainly not a perfect game but it is what it is. Some odd few fellows have asked me if I'll be updating this game ever. I feel like the game is done in it's own way. Scarecrow 2 feels like a bit of a "dead-end" project for me personally since I don't really know what to add. On top of that, updating it would take a lot of effort and time which is not really something I can afford at the moment. I recall some people recommending I put the game out on Steam, but this title feels so trivial and lacking in content that I don't think it's all too worthy to be out on Steam. Sure, I could update it, but it's really a guessing game on whether or not it would be successful :P

I've certainly had some ideas in terms of updates like maybe some new maps for survival mode or new weapons like a flamethrower or sniper-rifle, some sort of player customization and even a new "escape" game-mode where you try to escape a cultist camp who have abducted you. They're all ideas and the time it would take to get them working would be pretty damn long, so I don't know if I'll ever get through with it. We can all hope though, right? Keep in mind that I develop my games completely solo, outside of play-testing of course. One man can only do so much.

Some people have even asked for a 3rd part to scarecrow, but I just don't think this series is any worth for a third installment. It would just be the same thing again maybe with different graphics and locations. It absolutely doesn't feel worth being made and I'm not a big fan of making infinite sequels to games. But, y'know. Anything could happen.

I think that just about wraps everything up. I'm very thankful to everyone who has viewed and played the game, and even donated. You all rock! Big ups to you all.
